How to Play Cornhole
Cornhole is another name for a bean-bag tossing game in which players attempt to toss beanbags into a hole in a wooden target. It's a safer backyard alternative to horseshoes, which could cause physical harm if the shoes strike someone. A common sight at patio events, cornhole is a simple game to learn. Once you know the rules, you can play cornhole in your own backyard with a set.
Who Can Play Cornhole?
Anyone of any age can play cornhole. The American Cornhole Association – yes, this game has an official group – outlines rules to play cornhole for both kids and adults. Kids have their goals set at a closer distance than those used for adults. You can even most the goals closer and use smaller bean bags for very young kids who want to enjoy playing with the rest of the family.
What Comes in a Cornhole Set
A deluxe cornhole set includes two boards and two sets of four bags. However, feel free to order additional, regulation-sized cornhole bags if needed for more advanced or league play. Regulation-sized bags weigh a full 16 ounces each and measure 6-inches-by-6-inches. Some sets, such as a compact cornhole set with a smaller hole, use smaller 4-inches-by-4-inches bags.
How to Play Cornhole
To play cornhole, individuals compete against each other or play happens between teams of two. Set up the court for adults by separating the two goals 27 feet apart from the front to the front for adults to play. For youth play, separate the goals by 12 to 15 feet.
Each player stands next to their opponent's board and tosses their four bags toward their goal. After finishing their four tosses, the opponent tosses theirs. Scoring happens before continuing to the next round. Each player only has 20 seconds to complete their throws.
When scoring, a bag that goes through the hole – whether knocked in or tossed – earns three points. A bag that lands on the board earns one point. After scoring, the other pair from each team plays or the individuals play another round. The first person or team to get to 21 points wins.
